Description
This exquisite and unique handmade mug made by Lydia Johnson celebrates the colorful floral & fruit shapes often seen in Henri Matisse's work. In 2017, Lydia developed a printing technique using stencils and liquid-colored clay to create double-sided patterned slabs. This technique is not Nerikomi or Neriage. The artist prints imagery on a flat piece of clay and then builds with it to create her functional pots. In her work, visual pattern and color function as fundamental structures. A double-sided, printed slab is her material. When fired, thin slab-built ceramic work reads more like metal or glass. The pieces feel and sound different!
Lydia uses tableware as a vehicle to explore imagery within functional forms. These familiar objects challenge her to innovate. She asks herself, "how can I evoke feelings or emotions out of something common?". All-over pattern/color creates an engaging physical & visual relationship between user and object which she hopes orchestrates synergy of the eyes, hands, mind & heart.
