Much as we have our first cup of coffee each morning to kickstart our day, van Gogh often used drawing as a way to motivate himself. He drew thousands of images to better his skills, to fulfill leisure time and most importantly to bring himself out of depression. Van Gogh saw drawing as a necessary task to build a foundation as an artist and to study form and movement.
