Description
Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was trained in traditional methods but took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model complex, turbulent, and deeply textured surfaces in clay. He represented the human body with striking naturalism, and his sculptures highlight both individuality and physical presence.
Eve, one of Rodin’s most renowned works, is regarded as a masterpiece of modern sculpture. While creating it, Rodin worked with an Italian model whose changing form influenced the development of the piece. During the process, she revealed that she was expecting a child and could no longer continue posing. Rodin left the work unfinished, but the subtle forward curve of the pelvis gives the sculpture a powerful association with motherhood and the enduring symbolism of Eve as the mother of humanity.
