Description
Five quilts. Five members of the community. Inspired by works from Gee’s Bend, Alabama acquired by the museum in 2017 through the Souls Grown Deep Foundation, this exclusive collaboration of upholstered furniture features digitally reproduced artwork licensed from esteemed Gee’s Bend artists, Mary Lee Bendolph, Delia Bennett, Annie E. Pettway, Loretta Pettway, and Magdalene Wilson.
The works created by the women of Gee’s Bend are among the most recognizable and beloved quilts worldwide. Integral to the cultural and historical identity of African American communities in the South, the women of Gee’s Bend crafted quilts in a distinctive style renowned for its vibrant improvisations and geometric simplicity. The quilts were often crafted from remnants of clothing, including a variety of work clothes and simple motifs of the day.
Our quilt patterns are digitally printed on cotton and have a lifelike quality that mimics the original, with every stitch, pattern and color rendered in stunning detail. Each piece is sustainably crafted by skilled artisans on demand in Chicago, Illinois by Cloth & Company, a woman led, family-owned company who has been manufacturing furniture for four generations. Your furniture will ship directly to you in 3-4 weeks.
