Description

Our exclusive sketchbook celebrates the 1973 "Marcel Duchamp" Exhibition held at the Museum from September 22nd thru December 9th and Man Ray's photographs of Marcel Duchamp alias Rrose Sélavy.

The exhibition was co-curated by Anne d'Harnoncourt of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Kynaston McShine of the Museum of Modern Art.  In addition to these venues the show traveled to The Art Institute of Chicago.  This exhibition, the third retrospective dedicated to the artist and the first organized following his death, was a fitting inaugural exhibition of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's newly formed Twentieth Century Art Department.  The show highlighted its unrivaled collection of Duchamp works, the majority of which came to the Museum through the 1950 gift of the Louise and Walter Arensberg Collection.

Rrose Sélavy first appeared in 1920, but the second ‘r’ in her name wasn’t added until 1921 when she added her signature to Francis Picabia’s collage L’Oeil Cacodylate. She began appearing in photographs taken by Man Ray, fashion photographer, fellow artist and informal Dada compatriot. The perfect Duchampian character, Rrose brought to life the artist’s symbolic use of language as well as the playfulness and irony of Dadaism. Her name, a pun on the French adage “Eros, c’est la vie,” has inspired everything from collections of surrealist poetry to an oyster bar in Manhattan.
