Description
Melissa Shook (April 18, 1939 – August 27, 2020) was an American photographer, artist and educator. Her photographs are part of an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Invitation Only: Photographs by Barbara Crane, Melissa Shook, and Carol Taback which looks closely at three photographic series from the 1970s, for which Crane, Shook, and Taback each set similar self-imposed and rigid parameters for where they would take pictures. Confining their working environments to a single doorway or room opened up enormous creative possibilities, paradoxically freeing up each photographer to produce highly original and insightful portraits.
