These exquisite, one-of-a-kind Waterlilies mugs are made for the Art Museum of Philadelphia by local maker Cait Davis, a potter from a rich lineage of makers and performers, born and raised in Philadelphia. Cait was classically trained in both painting and ceramics and has dedicated her life to working with clay. Making functional pieces with a quiet beauty, Cait hopes they bring ease and comfort to people’s lives. Everything she creates is a labor of love and is built on a foundation of the work her family and mentors started years ago.
What Cait found most exciting about this series was the invitation to join her knowledge of glaze chemistry with her love of painting. She went to MICA where she studied painting and ceramics. The challenge of developing a mug inspired by Monet's The Japanese Footbridge and Water Lily Pool felt so pertinent to her and her relationship to painting at this point in her career. The joy she felt returning to a beloved method of work after setting it aside for many years. In order to create these magnificent mugs, she first ran a series of glaze tests in order to create her palette and understand how her glazes would behave together. Her meticulous process resulted in unique, individual pieces of art.
