Description

American Furniture, 1650–1840: Highlights from the Philadelphia Museum of Art is the first publication dedicated to one of the finest collections of its type in the country. Best known for furniture by artisans from Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania, the museum’s collection includes significant examples from cities and regions farther afield. Interpretive texts for each work focus on design sources, showing how early American furniture participated in an international visual language.

Interesting essay on the formation of the collection. Lots of great information on makers and early owners plus outstanding photographs. Print is very small but I realize there was a huge amount of information to cram into one book.

It is not possible to underestimate the importance and the contribution that this long-awaited book will serve in the future appreciation of Philadelphia and the museum's contribution in the understanding of their role in interpreting for future generations what can now be identified as American artisanship displayed at its finest. The undertaking was extensive, carefully procured and written with a hand equal to the art.
