Description

A father’s love radiates from this iridescent painting of sunlight and youth. Shaped by the realist tradition of Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Daniel Garber adopted Impressionist color and handling during a two-year sojourn in Europe. Returning in 1907, he settled into a farm along Cuttalossa Creek in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he harmoniously merged nature, art, and domestic life. In this portrait of his daughter, Tanis, light from the garden outside his studio renders her smock translucent, while the composition’s serene geometry captures the shimmer of an endless summer afternoon.
