Among Cassatt’s surviving pastel boxes are two flat wooden containers that have labels reading “Pastels a l’ecu”, a brand name of the Parisian colormaker Sennelier, founded in 1887. Gustave Sennelier, a devoted chemist, researched the history and usage of pigments to develop a distinctive process for manufacturing colors.
