Barkley Hendricks was born in Philadelphia and received his early training at the Pennsylvania Academy of fine Arts. Believing that “How people dress is how they want to be seen by the world”, he is primarily known for his life-size portraits of family and friends. They face their audience with the same pride in their race and culture that Hendricks himself felt and which he felt obliged to present. Here he portrays Miss T (painted in 1969) showing you her security and confidence in who she is.
