Description

The Ars Medica Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art was established in 1949 with express aim to assemble a pictorial history of medicine.  A great number of these are devoted to dentistry.  Many of them focus on the thrilling experience of pulling a tooth or having it pulled, depending on which chair you are sitting in. But, there are also many posters and advertisements encouraging you to clean, whiten, and take care of your teeth, just like we see today.

Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Mar. 28-May 30, 1999
