Description
The first native artist to specialize in landscape, the Philadelphia-born Doughty displays all his delicacy and skill in this picture. Based on observation and dedicated to a sense of accurate topography, his view pays tribute to the beauties of the Delaware Valley. Fine, feathered brushwork and pearly colors create a soft and atmospheric effect. Such work established a model for the younger Thomas Cole, who would join Doughty to lead the Hudson River School.
