Description

Part of our ongoing line of Illuminated Editions, in which today’s greatest graphic artists bring new life to literary classics with original illustration and design.

Known primarily as an early interpreter of Japanese culture and customs, the famous writer Lafcadio Hearn also wrote ghost stories--"delicate, transparent, ghostly sketches"--about his adopted land. Many of the stories found in Kwaidan, "stories and studies of strange things," are based on Japanese tales told long ago to him by his wife; others possibly have a Chinese origin. All have been re-colored and reshaped by Hearn's inimitable hand.

The great painter and multimedia artist Kent Williams is depicting the supernatural Japanese stories of Lafcadio Hearn, originally published in his books Kwaidan and Shadowings. These books are full of ghost stories, nightmares and strange tales -- of possessed forests, of monks tormented by demons and ghosts, of corpse brides, man-eating goblins, and undead samurai. They come to life as never before under Williams' brush.

Featuring an introduction by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, a foreword by writer Kyoko Yoshida, and a biographical afterword by Hearn's great-grandson and director of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, Bon Koizumi.
