These hand-built, multi-colored petal plates are a fun size for a tea bag, cone incense, a few chocolate-covered almonds, rings or studs, and secrets! These charming flower dishes are made by Mackenzie utilizing the Nerikomi process.
Mackenzie Pikaart, the artist behind MVP STUDIO, makes hand-built, functional ceramic objects for everyday rituals /routines, and adornment of home and body, in her home studio in Philadelphia PA. Recently, she has been focusing on creating traditional Japanese Nerikomi agate-like surfaces, practicing layering techniques, composing colorful glazes, and patterning. Her work is made in small batches, where she focuses on each slab, while also creating a collection of cousins. Because of this technique of Nerikomi, each piece is unique but looks like relatives to create a larger family. Mackenzie was first introduced to clay in high school and then studied at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA where she received her BFA in ceramics. After college, she needed a little recovery from clay after graduation, so she started working on large-scale installations. Her installation work investigates memories, awareness of space, and creating a visual of her extremely active dream life. They have been shown all across Philadelphia, including the International Airport, as well as Japan, and many locations in New Haven, CT. Mackenzie is a ceramics educator and consultant, where she teaches about clay, glazes, kilns, and building techniques.
