Description

As an artist trained in Philadelphia by Thomas Eakins, Tanner's work was grounded in realist observation.  A trip to the Holy Land in 1897 had Tanner choose to make the biblical past feel contemporary by portraying Mary as a believable young woman stunned by the apparition that appears before her.

One of the most cherished works of the museum's collection, it was acquired soon after being show in the 1898 Paris Salon.  It was also the first of his works to enter a museum in the United States and the foundation of the Museum's distinguished survey of work by African American artists.

The perfect gift for art-lovers and puzzle enthusiasts of all levels.
